Nude Against Abstract Forms

Acrylic and oil on paper, roughly 50 by 70 cm. A standing nude in profile, hair pinned up, one arm crossing the body to the shoulder. The figure stands against flat fields of red, blue, orange and yellow. The whole work is built on one contrast: the soft, flowing movement of the body against the hard, abstract blocks of colour behind it. I wanted to avoid a classical, static pose, so the arm folds inward, a held, almost guarded gesture rather than a display. The brushwork stays warm and loose on the skin where the colour fields stay flat and deliberate, so the body reads as the one living thing in a built space.
