About me

I’m Sander Visser (1977), a figurative painter with a strong focus on portraiture and the human figure. My fascination with the human subject deepened when I encountered the work of artists such as Breitner, Israëls, and Singer Sargent. Their way of seeing, the loose brushwork, and the sensitive use of light and posture sparked something in me that I continue to explore in my own work.

I mainly paint with oils and enjoy working on wood or canvas. My style sits somewhere between impressionism and classical painting. I’m always looking for the tension between technique and expression, between what is seen and what is felt. While most of my paintings focus on portraits and figures, I often return to landscapes as a source of calm and inspiration.

To keep improving my technique, I take classes at the Wackers Academy in Amsterdam and regularly attend life drawing sessions in Bergen. These sessions help sharpen my eye and keep my hand loose—an essential part of my process.

One of my most memorable experiences as a painter was participating in the Dutch television program Sterren op het Doek. I had the opportunity to paint a portrait of Tineke de Nooij—an experience that left a lasting impression and deepened my appreciation for the power of portraiture.

I live and work in the north of the Netherlands. In my paintings, I aim to capture a certain stillness and depth— something that lingers, even long after the painting is complete.
